These coffees’ terroir make them delicate and lightly perfumed, similar to tea and flowers. They are generally best enjoyed without milk and truly flourish as drip coffees.

This coffee comes from our partner in the Koperative Dutezimbere Kawa Kigeyo (KODUKAK), which counts 990 farmer-members specialized in growing Arabica coffee of Bourbon variety.

Their plots of land are located on the shores of Lake Kivu and several factors influence the taste of these beans: their terroir, climatic conditions and post-harvest practices, but also the aromas common to bourbons, characterized by a more pronounced fruity taste, slightly sweet and sour.

Since the civil war and genocide in the 1990s, coffee production in Rwanda – particularly fair trade and organic productions – has provided a source of economic stability and hope to thousands of farmers and communities. In 2006, 257 coffee farmers in the Kigeyo region of Rwanda came together to collectively improve the quality of the region’s coffee. After a year of working together, they officially founded the KODUKAK cooperative and became certified fair trade and organic in 2015.

At the workshop, we especially appreciate the floral and delicate profile of these bourbon beans, reminiscent of roses and black tea. As it’s a full-bodied, round coffee, we also use it in GETAWAY, our signature espresso blend (formerly called Divino!).
