WILD BERRIES • BUTTER • CHAMOMILE
These coffees’ terroir make them delicate and lightly perfumed, similar to tea and flowers. They are generally best enjoyed without milk and truly flourish as drip coffees.
These Ethiopian coffee beans from the Negele Gorbitu cooperative are a classic example of the unique and sought-after characteristics of the Yirgacheffe region. They present delicate tea flavors, bright acidity, lots of body, and a wide range of berry flavours.
They are part of our highest quality offering, with batches scoring between 85 and 88 on the SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) specialty coffee scale each year
The Negele Gorbitu cooperative, from which we source these beans, is a member of the Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (SCFCU) and was founded at the end of the communist regime in Ethiopia and the establishment of the Federal Democratic Republic (1996). The farmers’ plots are located at high altitude, on the border of the Oromia and Yirgacheffe regions.
SCFCU members have been growing and processing for over 30 years. They produce about 10,000 tons of high quality organic Arabica beans annually, of which about 95% are produced using the “washed” processing method.
The SCFCU has been Fair Trade Labelling Organizations International (FLO-Cert) certified since 2003, playing a leading role in developing relationships between producers and buyers, allowing them to export their extraordinary, high quality coffee directly to the world. Today, the SCFCU represents 53 cooperatives and over 80,000 small farmer families, making it the second largest union of coffee cooperatives in Ethiopia.
